ART AT THE HEART

of the Domaines de Chabran

Art is an integral part of the soul of the Domaines de Chabran—it is what we love, what moves us, and what contributes to the essence of these homes. As you wander through the different houses, you will discover a carefully curated collection of artworks gathered over the years, each with its own story to tell. This is a living and ever-evolving collection, where some pieces, like family members, remain forever, while others pass through briefly before continuing their journey elsewhere.

Many works travel from one house to another—for example, the painting by Jan Gulfoss, which was originally at Mas Estello and now resides in its new home, Mas de Castillone. We primarily seek to collaborate with artists who create in or have a connection to Provence, but we also believe that art should not be linear or bound by borders—which is why, from time to time, a piece from afar finds its place in our homes.

Through the Art@Chabran projects, we invite our guests to discover these works in a relaxed and intimate setting. Some of the exhibited pieces are available for purchase, while others are part of our permanent collection. For those who fall in love with an artwork that is not for sale, our team would be delighted to help them find a similar piece.

FLORENCE BAMBERGER X LE MAS DE CHABRAN

A Unique Collection of Hand-Painted Ceramic Plates – Art at the Heart of Mas de Chabran

Our collaboration with Florence Bamberger, a multidisciplinary artist based in Paris, began in 2021 with the acquisition of some of her works. A graduate of Central Saint Martins in London in graphic design (2009) and Penninghen School in Paris with a Master’s in Art Direction (2011), Florence has developed a distinctive artistic universe that blends illustration, painting, and object design. Her work, characterized by graphic sensitivity and a handcrafted approach, is expressed through vibrant and timeless creations.

From this encounter, the idea of an exclusive collection of decorative ceramic plates inspired by Mas de Chabran and the essence of Provence was born.

A few months later, a limited edition of 24 hand-painted plates came to life, capturing the beauty of the surrounding landscapes, the rich Provençal heritage, and the timeless elegance of the Mas. Some of these exquisite pieces have found homes with our clients and friends, while others continue to adorn the chef’s kitchen at Mas de Chabran.

Today, our collaboration continues with a new edition released each year, each plate carefully painted and signed with a handwritten dedication. These unique creations are also available for order and customization—the perfect gift to commemorate a special moment or offer guests a personalized keepsake of their stay.

JAN GULFOSS

Between Nature and Staging

Born in the Netherlands but having spent most of his life in the south of France, Jan Gulfoss has been fascinated by nature from a young age. A man who considers the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco his second studio, he creates photographic compositions of animals and other objects, staged in theatrical settings.

We have several of Jan’s works in our collection, displayed at Mas de Chabran and Mas de Castillone. Look for the grand piece “Camargue”, adorning the wall of the formal dining room at Mas de Chabran. This photograph captures the proud Camargue horse, accompanied by its trusted companion, the egret, perched on its back. This duo originates from our region and can often be seen in the marshes of the Camargue nature reserve—a perfect symbiosis between horse, bird, and nature in all its splendor.

Jan continues to create and can be found working in his studio in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

LIDIA MASLLORENS

The Emotion of Portraiture Through a Unique Technique

Lidia is a Spanish painter whose current project focuses on the archetypal portrait of the early 21st century. Her large-scale works have a strong presence—the portrait hanging in the living room of Mas de Chabran is one of the most admired and celebrated pieces in the house.

Lidia takes a unique approach to the watercolor technique. Her portraits are painted with black acrylic, then the paint is removed and washed with a mixture of water and bleach. Special mention must also be made of the tools she uses: brushes and rollers of all sizes, along with pieces of cloth and textile.

This technique creates the stunning color palette that sets her work apart, with shades ranging from pink to white and black to gray. Lidia’s brushstrokes are sharp and fast, often leading to many losses and failures due to the destructive nature of bleach and the unpredictable behavior of water.

This piece is not for sale, but we would be happy to help you find an alternative.

PASCALE SIMON

Driven by a Passion for the Precision of Drawing

A graduate of the prestigious Penninghen school, Pascale Simon initially pursued a career in scientific illustration.

Her experience as an artist abroad later opened up new perspectives: oil painting, sculpture, and, always, drawing. The latter remains the cornerstone of her work, enhanced by the vibrancy of oil painting, which brings a more contemporary spirit. These two artistic expressions, deeply rooted in her work, define her identity and strength.

JULES MILHAU X Mas de Castillone

A Vibrant Tribute to Camargue Culture

Born and raised in Nîmes, Jules Milhau is a remarkable young artist who gained recognition at just 15 years old. From the age of three, drawing and painting became his natural means of expression, deeply influenced by the rich traditions of the Camargue—bullfighters, flamenco dancers, and the captivating world of Gypsy culture.

“My painting is an echo of the rhythms and passions of my homeland,” he says, capturing the essence of Provence through vibrant colors and dynamic forms.

In the grand salon of Mas de Castillone, two of his works depict Sara la Noire, the revered saint of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a pilgrimage site steeped in legend. His interpretation is both powerful and intimate, infused with history, devotion, and the soul of southern France.
